Performance of wheat varieties in response to various N-P combination levels

The present study was carried out to evaluate the performance of wheat varieties in response to various NP fertilizer levels, at Wheat Station, Agriculture Research Institute, Tandojam, during 1998-99. The data was recorded on various growth and yield contributing components i.e. plant height, number of tillers per plant, number of 'grains per ear heads, length of earhead, weight of grains per earhead, seed Index, biological yield and grain yield per hectare. The experiment was laid out in a three replicated randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement. Three N-P levels were 102-34, 134-67 and 168-87 kg per hectare. Varieties included were Abadgar, Anmol-91 and Mehran-89. The results shows that plant height, seed index value, biological yield and grain yield affected significantly due to increasing, N-P levels and wheat varieties. But the differences was not so pronounced for number of tillers per plant, number of grains per earhead, earhead length and weight of grains per earhead due to varying N-P levels, varieties as well as for their interaction. But only grain weight was significantly affected by varieties. Plant height was maximum in case of variety Anmol-91 (92.94 cm), while minimum under Abadgar (87.28 cm), while in case of fertility levels, maximum plant height 93.77 cm was under 168-87 kg N-P per hectare. Number of tillers per plant remained unaffected by varieties, nitrogen levels and their interaction. However, values were comparatively higher under higher N-P level of 168-87 kg per hectare and variety Abadgar, which recorded 5.60 and 5.76 number of tillers respectively. Number of grains per earhead was maximum in case of variety Mehran-89 (37.33), while second position was Abadgar (36.32), and Anmol-91, produced less. 168-87 kg N-P level produced comparatively greater number of grain (37.01) per earhead, while 102-34 kg N-P/ha produced 35.58 number of grains per head. Maximum earhead length of 9.38 cm was observed in case of higher N-P level of 168-87 kg per hectare, while minimum (8.38 cm) under 102-34 kg per hectare. Ear head was affected significantly only under different varieties, 168-87 kg produced comparatively closely followed by 2.55 g under weight in case of 102-34 kg N-P level. Significantly higher grains weight 2.64 g per Mehran-89 and Anmol-91 ranked second and third respectively. The results were statistically highly significant for seed index in case of varieties and N-P levels. N-P level of 168-87 kg per hectare, produced maximum (41.77 g) seed index and lowest was recorded from 102-34 kg NP/ha (35.15 g). Variety Abadgar produced significantly higher seed index 41.79 g and less 37.86 g seed index from variety Anmol-91. N-P level of 168-87 kg per hectare produced biological yield of 9346 kg per hectare, while 102-34 kg N-P -level recorded 8502-kg biological yield per hectare. Variety Abadgar produced highest biological yield (9392 kg) per hectare, and Anmol-91 produced less (8799 kg/ha). Similarly, N-P levels and varieties affected grain yield per hectare significantly. The maximum grain 4033 kg per hectare was recorded under 168-87 kg N-P level, closely followed by 134-67 kg with grain yield of 4039 kg per hectare. Among varieties Abadgar produced significantly higher (4017 kg/ha) grain yield as compared to Mehran-89 (3934 kg/ha) and Anmol-91 (3873 kg/ha), respectively.
