Effect of storage fungi on seed quality parameters of different mustard varieties

Seven storage rotting fungi Aspergillus flavus, Alternaria brassicae, Helminthosporium brassicae, Penicillium sp., Pythium sp., Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporum were isolated from infected seeds of S-9, B-Raya, Y-Raya and B-M-1 mustard varieties. Aspergillus flavus was isolated as most predominant fungus from all four mustard varieties according to its infection percentage. The germination percentage was reduced from infected seeds of B- Raya, Y-Raya, B-M-1 and S-9 mustard varieties in both laboratory and pot experiments. The overall germination from healthy seed was (92.5-93.0. The 1000 seed weight and soil content were decreased in all infected seeds of S-9, B-Raya, Y-Raya and B-M-1 mustard varieties as compared to healthy seeds. The fatty acid (euracic acid) and glucosinolates were also reduced in seed colonized with storage rooting fungi. The maximum germination was recorded with Baytan followed by Vitavax, Derosal, Tri-miltox and Dithane M-45 respectively. The radial colony growth of Aspergillus flavus was completely inhibited by Baytan as compared to other fungicides Vitavax, Derosal, Tri-miltox and Dithane M-45 respectively.
