Effect of organic matter and soil reaction on the content of heavy metals in soils and grassland plants

Studies revealed significant differentiation of arable land soils in reference to heavy metals content. Trace element levels were higher in soils with organic matter surplus and of higher pH. Soil reaction strongest affected the heavy metal contents in plant from arable lands; it contributed to decreasing the level of most recorded elements. Higher pH and greater share of organic matter affected only the increase of lead concentration in plants. However, the total concentration of trace elements in soil was also the reason of differences in lead, chromium, nickel, zinc and iron contents in grassland plants
