Floristic changes on meadows in the Barycz River Valley in the last three decades

Floristic changes were evaluated on the basis of comparison of floristic surveys, prepared in the past and in 1999-00 by the Braun-Blanquet method. In the investigated period of thirty years, as a result of partial drying of peat bogs, lack of maintenance of drainage facilities and negligence in management, mainly the proportion of Alopecuretum pratensis meadows decreased and 12 communities disappeared. At the same time number of plant species occurring in associations also decreased, following a deterioration in moisture conditions of the sites and their greater fertility. Moreover, the calculated floristic diversity indices also declined. Because of floristic changes the use value of the associations decreased, too. Bearing in mind the fact that permanenet grasslands constitute a part of the Lanscape Park "Dolina Baryczy", it is recommended to preserve various meadow communities in this valley
