Effects of double-trunk on growth and fruiting of apple trees

In spring 1995 one-year-old Red Boskoop apple trees grown on semidwarfing P 14 apple rootstocks were planted in an orchard. In 1996 M 9 shoots, 30 cm long, were bridge-grafted on the trunks of these trees. In the next years the flow of assimilates and bioregulators through the main trunks of trees was blocked by girdling (removing 1 or 2 rings of bark, 3, 6, 9 10 mm wide). All treatments except the one with a 3 mm ring of bark decreased the trunk cross-section area of the trees above the place of grafting. Only treatment with 2 rings of bark 9 mm wide decreased the trunk cross-section area below the place of grafting. All treatments decreased the canopy volume and the length of long shoots. In the year following treatments the flowering and fruiting of trees intensified while the weight of 1 fruit decreased
