The studies were carried out at the Agricultural Experimental Station in Pawlowice near Wroclaw (Poland) in 1998-00. Straw was ploughed in and high rates of C (1.5 t/ha) and N (75 kg/ha) were applied to oil seed rape and winter wheat plots. To determine the density of mites, 12 soil cores, 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm deep were collected between rows in autumn and in spring. No effect of ploughing in of winter wheat straw on soil mites was found in oil seed rape crop. Also high rate of Ca and N soil application as well as mixed application of straw and mineral fertilization had not effect on number of Acari. The most numerous in soil samples were Oribatida followed by Prostigmata and Gamasida. Ploughing in of oil seed rape straw and mixed application of straw and Ca fertilizer reduced number of soil mites in winter wheat crop. The highest population reduction was found in the case of Prostigmata
