Growth evaluation and nutrients uptake by ornamental covering plants as affected by medium composition and pH

Evaluation of Berberis thunbergii 'Green Carpet', Cotoneaster horizontalis, Cotoneaster 'Ursynow', Potentilla fruticosa 'Goldstar' and Spiraea inerea 'Grefsheim' for cultivation on acid mineral soil amended with sphagnum peat (3:1 or 1:3) was made. Each type of soil was adjusted to pH (H2O) 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5 before planting. The best growth of all tested species except S.cinerea was obtained with more mineral soil (soil + peat 3:1). B.thunbergii and S.cinerea preferred acid soil (pH 4.5) irrespective of its composition. The effect of soil pH on growth was less evident in case of C. horizontalis, Cotoneaster 'Ursynow' and P. fruticosa. After two years of cultivation differences between pH of tested soils decreased comparing to initial pH values. Type of soil and pH did not strongly affect mineral element uptake by tested species
