Integrated genomics as a basis for novel agrobiotechnology

Over last two decades new highly advanced genomic approaches have created unprecedented progress in understanding the structure-function relationship between nucleic acids and proteins across diverse organisms. The sequencing data combined with computation analysis have fundamentally changed the prospects of modern agrobiotechnology. This led to the development of novel strategies for plant protection, increasing crop yield and producing in plants some pharmaceutical compounds including those used for immunoprotection of human and animals. Plant comparative genomics is based on selected model plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana, rice or some legumes. The emerging fields such as functional genomics and proteomics address the questions of functional significance of individual genes for plant development under various environmental conditions
