Note
In the valley areas with access to irrigation water, the main crops are potatoes, considered the head of the rotation, and maize, where as in the higher areas, which have sufficient moisture but no access to irrigation, the small grain cereals are part of the rotation, but still with potatoes as the main crop. In the semiarid areas, wheat is cultivated as a monoculture, alternated with fallow periods of one or more years, and an occasional maize crop. The paper describes the interactions between the different system components, including crops, livestock and product transformation.
