MRI evaluation of acute brain injury caused by kainate intoxication

The aim of this study was to evaluate the capability of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the detection of lesions accompanied by seizures. The lesions were caused by acute insult with systemically administered kainate. T1-weighted MR images were taken before and after, both, the insult with kainate and the administration of the contrast medium. Gadomer-17 was the contrast agent used. MR signals obtained from the pre-kainate and post-kainate scans were quantitatively compared to evaluate the contrast enhancement of the brain lesions. Morphological changes were first observed after 40 minutes in both the post-contrast and post-kainate images. Most of the changes in signal intensity were measured in the hippocampus region where the density of kainate receptors in the brain is the highest. The results permit the conclusion that contrast-enhanced MRI is a useful method for determining the location and extent of lesions accompanied by seizures. Therefore, contrast-enhanced MRI can be helpful in diagnosing the location and extent of injuries accompanied by seizures as well as help in the treatment and prognosis of disease.
