The article analyses the situation on the domestic poultry and egg market in terms of self-sufficiency and consumption, both in Slovakia and the EU. In the recent past (1997-2000), the average number of poultry reached 14.7 million head per year, of which 6.3 million were laying hen. During the period under review, the number of broilers increased and reached 42.5% of the total. The annual supply of poultry meat reached 95,300 tons on average; production accounted for 88.6%. Imports of poultry amounted to 6,100 tons per year, which represents 6.4% of total supply. The breeding of waterfowl is still in recession - domestic production is seasonal and retail chains import most waterfowl from abroad. In all years during the monitored period, Slovakia's foreign trade in poultry and eggs showed deficits. This was mainly due to the growing imports of live poultry and poultry meat. During the period under review, Slovakia attained a 95-percent self-sufficiency in poultry and eggs, which is below the average of selected EU member states
