The influence of cultivation substrate contamination by cadmium on growth-production and physiological processes of paprika

In 1997-1999, pot experiments were performed with paprika (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. Slovakia in 8 treatments of substrate (different fertilization, pH and organic matter content and presence of sulphuric Desulfovibrio desulfuricans bacteria) to determine the influence of cadmium presence in cultivation substrate on some physiological characteristics of paprika plants. Presence of Cd (10 ppm) in cultivation substrate fertilized by 25 mg/kg N, 70 mg/kg P and 25 mg/kg K has the adverse influence on water relations, growth and development of paprika in comparison with all other treatments of substrate. Water deficit increases by 25.55-65.67% and a transpiration rate decreases by 6.87-18.57% in the morn¡ng and by 9.83-51.89% at noon. There is a fall in dry weight of paprika leaves and fruits. Differences between the treatment with NPK + Cd and the other substrate treatments increase in the course of the vegetation period from 4.72-26.57% in July up to 15.69-54.45% in September within fruits and from 10.36-12.14% to 11.57-15.45% within leaves. All of the determined adverse Cd effects significantly reduce after application of sulphuric bacteria into Cd-contaminated substrate
