The predominant part of sulphur in soil occurs in the form of organic compounds, so its content depends on that of organic compounds in soil. Resynthesis of organic fractions of sulphur in soil needs a presence of organic acceptors. In case of their absence the mineralization predominates over the resynthesis of organic fractions and sulphur sulphate-fraction content in soil increases, accumulating either in the under-plough layer or being washed out from soil. Fertilization with mineral fertilizers enhances the intensity of organic sulphur fraction mineralization in soil. In intensive fertilization it is therefore necessary to pay attention to using organic fertilizers as well. A content of organic acceptors for resynthesis of organic sulphur fraction in soil will increase and the runoff of sulphur from soil will fall. Man exerts a substantial effect on sulphur circulation in the global system. The emission of SO2 in different countries of the world decreased by 21% to 58% in total. A long-term trend in SO2 in Slovakia can be characterised as a decrease. The importance of sulphur is increasing not only from the viewpoint of its influence on yields and production quality but also on the environment protection
