The paper deals with the determination of physical root characteristics of wheat grown on Haplic Vertisol soil at two rates of nitrogen fertilization. Root length density index for each 10 cm soil layer up to 60 cm depth was measured. Undisturbed soil cores at stage of milk maturity, when the root system was completely developed, were collected from row and between-row positions. We established that the N fertilizer added causes statistically significant increase in root length density in the 0-10 cm soil lyer only. We observed 50% RLD increase in the 10-20 cm soil layer for fertilized plots compared to that for the control one. Deeper than 20 cm and up to 60 cm we found no significant differences in RLD for fertilized and unfertilized plots. The RLD for row position was 9-30% higher than that for between row ones.
