[Productivity and body resistance of veal-calves when rearing in the open air]

The objective of the study was to estimate a method of veal-calves rearing in the cold to improve their vitality and to develop a technologic process of automated milk feeding.Veal-calves of Byelorussian Black and White breed were used in the experiment. Just after birth they were placed in individual "bennels" kept in the open air in winter and spring. In order to increase their natural resistance, laser radiation of low intensity (85 mw/cm2) without vein puncture was applied every day for 180 s for the first 10 days. The treatment cycle was repeated in 10 days interval laser radiation had a stimulative effect on hematologic parameters and natural resistance of experimental animals compensating their immonodeficiency in the first days of life. Bacterial growth-inhibitory activity, lysozyme and phagocytic activities and the level of immunoglobulinus increased by 6.6, 3.3, 16.6 and 13%, respectively. Average daily gains of treated calves increased by 11.4% at lower milk expenses by 16.9%. The economic efficiency of laser treatment was $32.8 per $1.0 of extra expenses. An automated equipment used to individual feeding of calves ensured higher feed conversion ratio by 21.9%. Its economic efficiency was $18.5 per head
