The economic liberalization model that Colombia chose as a platform for promoting growth and integration with the world economy since the end of the 1980's has brought important challenges for national producers in the area of international trade. In this context, the Colombian government has directed its efforts to achieve important headways in the negotiations of free-trade agreements with different economic blocs and countries. In fact, the government is presently carrying out a number of negotiations simultaneously, such as the Free Trade Area of the Americas (or ALCA, the acronym in Spanish), the consolidation of the Andean Customs Union (CAN) and the Doha Round of the WTO. Likewise, the government intends to initiate in the near future the negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (TLC) with the United States
