Safety of food is a high level priority for health service and protection of consumers, but in the same time this priority is also given to the primary production, processing, transportation, trade and analytical services, inspections, and consumers by themselves. The overall approach could only bring results and secure safe food. Present food control measures ate aimed mostly to processed products, with neglecting of control over the whole food chain (from farm to table). Two tired systems of control: different standards for food produced for domestic and international market did not bring improvement in this area. Future trends are: introduction of mandatory HACCP system in production and control of this system in inspection work, risk based system as a basis for new regulations and harmonization of all legislation in food sector with EU and international rules and principles. This will bring higher level of food safety and ensure export of food from Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
