Distribution of macroalgae was studied at 23 sites along seven rivers (the Golema, Crnovrska, Stanjanska, Visevacka, Svrljiski, Trgoviski and Beli Timok rivers). Algological samples were taken from the community of benthos and periphyton. Algae of the classes Ulothrichophyceae (species of the genera Ulothrix, Chaetophora, Draparnaldia, Stigeoclonium, Gongrosira and Oedogonium), and Siphonophyceae (Cladophora), Tetrasporophyceae (Tetraspora), and Conjugatophycea (Mougeotia, Spirogira, and Zygnema) were recorded. The species Draparnaldia plumosa, Gongrosira disciformis, Oedogonium vaucherii f. vaucherii and Stigeoclonium elongatum were recorded for the first time in Serbia. Occurrence of macroalgae in rivers was monitored in relation to a large number of abiotic factors, e.g. elevation above sea level, stream dimensions (width and depth), substrate, bottom type (%), current velocity, water temperature and pH, oxygen concentration, concentrations of nitrates and phosphates, and BOD.
