Some factors of rural development of Serbia and Montenegro - approaching EU

Serbia and Montenegro dispose of significant resources for both rural and agricultural development. In addition to fulfilling domestic needs for agricultural products, certain amount of products could be exported. Of the total population in Serbia and Montenegro, rural population accounts for 2.1 million, of which 1 million is active with regard to agricultural production. Considering cultivable soil and the geostrategic position of Serbia and Montenegro the active population has substantial base for agricultural production. Serbia and Montenegro along with the countries in the region have a population of 65 million and 12% of European agricultural area of which 16% of the total cultivable soil in Europe. Mutual cooperation between the coutries in the region in both agriculture and rural development can contribute to a rapid inclusion in European integration processes and successful harmonization with EU standards.
