Rural development and the future of rural communities
2003
Malesevic, K. (Institut za ekonomiku poljoprivrede, Beograd (Serbia and Montenegro))
From the point of view of rural sociology, which takes a holistic approach to the entirety of life in a particular space, the renewal, functioning and development of rural communities gives the very meaning to the rural areas and to the rural development. However in most parts of Europe, as well as in our own society, these communities are in the state of profound crisis. This in itself indicates great weakness and insufficiency of the existing concepts of development as applied to rural communities and the further need for a radical change of these concepts. It is only through the articulation of a complex, integral, differentiaded and sustanable rural development that one can embark upon a speedy revitalization of rural communities and the improvement of the quality of life in rural areas.
