Development of soil workability maps for field operations

This study comprises the application of a computer model based on soil moisture budgeting method and mapping the field work days for Aegean region conditions. Two years of field observations were carried out in order to be able to evaluate the validity of the program results out of past 10 years of soil water balance data all of which were collected by the Menemen Research Institute of Rural Services. Weekly, bi-weekly and monthly soil workabilities for two type field operations were determined at three different probability levels: 60%, 80% and 99%. The program results were found to be significantly reliable, especially for the 80% probability level. Following the validation of the model, given the climatic data from 21 different meteorological stations spread within the Ege (Aegean) Region, the soil data for two major soil types, alluvial and colluvial, of the region, and provided the workability criteria on these soils, solutions were generated and maps were drawn for every single month of the year and for two different soil types.
