Effect of level and distribution of missing places on the leaf area and the maize yield

A study was conducted in the period 1996-1997, in field conditions, to access the effect of level and distribution of missing places on the leaf area, quality of corncob, number of weed and the maize yield. Three factors were examined: 1) three sowing period, 2) three variants of missing places - percentage of missing places (15%, 30%, 40%) and one control variant without missing places, 3) four maize hybrids with different length of vegetation period (ZPTC 256, ZPSC 360, ZPSC 480, NSSC 444). On the basis of obtained results, level and distribution of missing places considerably affected increase of plant leaf area, length of the corncob, number of kernel per ear, 1000 - kernel weight while on the control variant without missing places, the length of the corncob, the number of kernel per ear and 1000 - kernel weight were the smallest. Missing places also significantly affect number of weed and green mass weight of weed per square meter. Increase in percentage of missing places is in the proportion with increase in the number of weed per square meter and the green mass weight of weed while on control variant without missing places, the number of weed per square meter and green mass weight of weed were the smallest. Average yield with 14% water in the grain decreased with increased percentage of missing places. The decrease in maize yield was smaller from the percentage of missing places (15 - 45%) and ranged from 10.52 - 38.20%. The increased production per plant in a more spaice crop the yield was partially compensated, from 3.56 - 11.57%. In the first sowing date, all examined hybrids had in average the smallest: the leaf area, the length of corncob, and the number of kernel per ear, 1000 - kernel weight and maize kernel yield. The number of weed per square meter and the green mass weight of weed were the highest in the first sowing date and the smallest in the third sowing date. The values of the plant leaf area, the length of corncob and the maize kernel yield were the highest in the third sowing date, while the number of kernel per ear, 1000 - kernel weight were highest in the second sowing date. The highest average yield had ZPSC 480 (9.20 t/ha) while the least yield had ZPTC 256 (7.53 t/ha).
