Effect of phosphogypsum and peat on microbiological and chemical properties of arenosol

Arenosol has low microbiological activity and proportionally low fertility. The objective of our study was to assess how the incorporation of phosphogypsum and peat improves the biological and chemical properties of this soil, making it more convenient for crop growing. The following variants were tested: 1) control - without phosphogypsum and peat, 2) phosphogypsum 15 t/ha + peat 64 t/ha, 3) phosphogypsum 20 t/ha. Microbiological and chemical properties of the soil were monitored during a period of three years at depths of 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40 and 40-50 cm. The incorporation of these amendments resulted in increases in the numbers of soil bacteria, fungi and azotobacters and increased dehydrogenase activity, while the number of actinomycetes was reduced. The incorporation intesified the microbiological activity in deeper soil layers, but the effectiveness of the practice seems to have slackened in the third year of the experiment. Lowering of soil pH and increase in humus content occurred in variant 2.
