The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the herbicide atrazine on the changes in the endogenous level of glutathione (total and oxidised) as well as in the amount of free thiol groups in two plant species with different sensitivity to atrazine - Pisum sativum and Triticum aestivum. The activities of two enzymes related to glutathione metabolism, glutathione reductase and glutathione S-transferase, were also evaluated. The application of the herbicide on leaf increased the levels of total and oxidised glutathione in pea and wheat plants. In contrast to pea, atrazine caused a rise in the glutathione S-transferase activity in wheat plants. No significant differences in glutathione reductase were observed.
