Response of Nigella sativa, L. to foliar application of gibberellic acid, benzyladenine, iron and zinc

unknown. A field experiment was carried out in the Experimental Farm of Assiut University during 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons. The aim was to study three sprays of GA3 (50 ppm), BA (20 ppm), Fe (50 ppm) and Zn (50 ppm) on vegetative growth, fruiting, oil production, leaf contents of carbohydrates, photosynthetic pigments, and some nutrient elements in order to define the optimum treatment for best yields of Nigella sativa, L. seeds and oil. The results showed that GA3 increased plant height, fresh and dry weights of herb, number of seeds per capsule, seed yield as well as fixed and volatile oil yields. Benzyladenine increased number of branches and capsules per plant, seed yield as well as fixed and volatile oil yields. Chlorophylls (a & b) and Fe content in leaves were not affected by any of used growth regulators. Meanwhile, carotenoids and zinc were slightly increased. Spraying plants with Fe + Zn considerably increased number of branches, fresh and dry weights of herb, capsule number, seed yield, fixed and volatile oil yields as well as carbohydrates content in leaves. Either Fe or Fe + Zn increased chlorophyll "a", but Zn alone was not effective. Iron concentration was increased in leaves as a result of spraying with Fe alone or in combination with Zn. Meanwhile, leaf content of Zn was increased as a result of applied Zn alone or in combination with Fe. On the contrary, Mn and N were not affected. Gibberellic acid combined with either Zn or Fe+Zn resulted in the maximum values of plant height as well as fresh and dry weights of herb. Meanwhile, BA combined with Fe+Zn increased number of capsules, seed yield, fixed and volatile oil yields, and carbohydrate content in leaves.
