In the present article the author discusses the operative and strategic tasks facing the sugar industry in the forthcoming years. In the short term EU accession poses a major challenge for the stakeholders of the sector as well as for the competent government authorities in terms of institutional preparation. Besides the regular mechanisms of the regime in 2004 this involves a number of transition measures too. As a result of accession, the conditions of sugar beet growing will improbe substantially in the short term, which provides a sound basis for longer-term investments. This is particularly important, as the framework of the regime change in 2006, with unforeseeable effects on the players of the sugar sector.
