Assessment of losses caused by black bug Cavlelerius(Excavatus) sweeti to sugarcane in yield and quality parameters

The nymphs and adult congregate in the central whole of the cane shoot and suck the sap. The affected shoot becomes pale, yellow in colour with brown patches and sickly appearance. These consequently affect the chlorophyll content of the leaves, length, girth and ultimately weight of the stalk. The healthy stalk exhibited comparatively higher length (171 cm), girth (1.95 cm) and weight (410 g.) as compared to 150 cm, 1.64 cm and 340 g in infested canes respectively. The loss in weight of canes was recorded on an average 17.07% in infested plants. The nitrogen content in infested leaves was recorded to be increased (0.35) as compared to that of healthy (0.13) because of infestation where as the chlorophyll content was decreased from 181/100 g. to 94/100 g. Thus it was found to be percentage loss in total 48.5 percentage loss in chlorophyll 'a' 43.0 and percentage loss in chlorophyll 'b' 54.2% was found. It was observed that there were 43, 54 and 48.5% decrease in chlorophyll 'a' chlorophyll b and total clilorophyll contents respectively. Likewise infestation of black bug affected the amino acids namely cystine, glycine, isoleucine, leucine, glutamic acid, lysine, serine and valine were absent in infested leaves, while these were found present in healthy leaves, along with alamine, argimine. aspartic acid, histidine, metheonine, phenyl -alamine, proline, tyrosine and trvotonhan
