Agrisilvicultural research in semi-arid tropics

The agroclimatic conditions in the semi-arid tropics is hostile and not much favourable to agriculture. Agroforestry, a land use system is the most appropriate technology for sustainable agriculture. It is known for its productive roles i.e. food, fodder, fruit, fuel and fertilizer from the same unit of land. The services roles played by the various Agroforestry systems are of vital importance (soil and moisture conservation, shade, shelter, fencing, etc.). Among the Agroforestry systems, agrisilvicultural is the most established system where research evidence has been well establish. The Agrisilvicultural Boundary plantation, Alley cropping, Shelter belts, Block plantation, Agri-silvi-pisiculture, Agri-sericulture and Agri-silvi-apiculture. Among all these sub-groups, the multipurpose tree species play the dominant roles. Studies at NRCAF, Jhansi revealed that Hardwickia binata, a nitrogen fixing multipurpose tree species in a agrisilvicultural system, increased the grain yield of wheat as raised in its interspaces. Also improved the fertility by increasing the organic matter content and affected micro-climatic changes. In the present paper organic matter recycling, soil and moisture conservation and allelopathic effects are presented.
