Reducing soil erosion by water for higher crop yeilds in foothills of lower Shiwaliks
2002
Kukal, S.S. | Hadda, M.S. (Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana (India))
High intensity rains, steeply sloping land and highly erodible soils in foothills of lower Shiwaliks result in loss of water as runoff which flows over the land carrying away fine fertile soil along with it. This results in reduced crop yields and poor socio-economic profile of the people. Bio-engineering measures viz. vegetative hedges and land modifying measures like field bunding, minor land levelling and provision of outlets for safe disposal of runoff water can successfully reduce runoff, increase soil water storage, decrease erosion, reduce nutrient loss and increase crop yields.
