Himachal Pradesh has vast water resources that comprise of rivers, rivulets, reservoirs, irrigation channels adn village ponds. The fish fauna of the state is also distinct, having various genera and species in the aquatic habbitat. Intensive fish production, however, is usually accompanied by increased disease problems as several physical and environmental stresses are predisposing them to infectious disease particulary bacterial disease. A number of different species of bacteria are being incriminated in fish diseases. Certain bacteria are capable of inducing mortality in fish fauna at almost any time, whereas, many others can only cause protracted harm at high tempretures, in overcrowded conditions in fresh soft water or in association with some other environmental circumstances that render the host suspectible. The study was undertaken to investigate bacterial pathogens of carps and other fish in Himachal Pradesh.
