Rabies : a new look to an old disease
2002
Nandi, S. (Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar (India))
The inability to bring all the rabies susceptible animals under the immunization umbrella is mainly due to - no restrictions of movement of animals, frequent dissemination of virus from wild animals, use of nervous tissue or low quality vaccines, non-maintenance of cold chain, presence of maternally-derived antibodies and existence of rabies related viruses. With 30 000 death annually, India accounts for the 80% casualties from rabies world-wide. The number of death tolls may be higher as many cases go unnoticed. People should have an in-depth knowledge and information about the epidemiology of the rabies so that the disease can be tackled in an efficient and effective manner and no one would fall prey to this.
