Clinico-therapeutic apsects of gastro-enteritis in dogs

Gastroenteritis of viral origin in general and parvo and corona in particular are highly infectious diseases of dogs. The canine parvo virus (CPV) infection is characterized by diarrhoea and vomition, with or without blood, inappetance, anaemia, fever and dehydration. Animals with coronavirus infection usually experience lethargy, decreased appetite, sudden onset of loose stool preceded by or simultaneous with vomition. For the diagnosis of CPV or CCV infection isolation or identification of viral agents from the suspected materials is required. However, the facilities for isolation are restricted to the standard laboratories. As a results, clinicans have to depend mostly on clinical signs for diagnosis of the viral diseases. In absence of prompt therapeutic measures mortality is not uncommon. Symptomatic and supportive treatment have been tried with variable results. The present study was designed to throw some light on clinical signs on viral gastoenteritis due to parvo and/or corona infection in dogs and suitable therapeutic measures to combat these problems.
