Allelopathic effects of some weeds on growth and yield of direct seeded upland rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Allelopathic effects of three common weeds, viz.Ageratum conyzoides, Borreria hispida and Eleusine indica were studied on two upland rice cultivars Lachit and Faporiahu. Spraying of aqueous extracts (1:4, w/v) of weeds showed both stimulatory and inhibitory effects. Plant height, leaf number, leafarea, tiller number and root dry weight were significantly reduced. Shoot dry weight was significantly increased by aqueous extract of B. hispida. Chlorophyll content and nitrate reductase activity of leaves were found to be altered. N, P, K content of shoots were reduced by A. conyzoides but P content in Lachit and K content in Faporiahu were increased by B. hispida. Days to 50% flowering was found to be delayed by A. conyzoides, whereas it was significantlyenhanced by E. indica. Number of panicle, total grains per panicle, thousand grain weight and yield were reduced by the weed extracts.
