Effect of plant density on brown sarson (Brassica campestris subsp. oleifera var. brown sarson) under different levels of nitrogen and phosphorus

A field experiment was conducted on silty clay-loam soils of Shalimar during winter (rabi) season of 1995-96 and 1996-97, to study effect of planting densities on newly released variety 'KS 101' of brown sarson [Brassica campesfris L. ssp. oleifera (Metzger) Sinsk. var. brown sarson] with different N and p rates. 'KS 101' ('Gulchein') performed better when sown at plant density of 33 plants/m2 (30 cm x 10 cm). For seed yield the variety responded significantly to nitrogen up to 60 kg/ha; however for different phosphorus levels (30, 45 and 60 kg/ha) it behaved alike. Among various treatments, N e 60 kg/ha gave highest returns and benefit: cost ratio. Although variation in p levels did not influence oil content, an increase in planting density up to 50 plants/m2 increased the oil content, whereas the reverse was true with N application.
