Response of Azolla pinnata and A. microphylla to different temperature regimes

Plants of Azolla p;nnata and A. m;cropltylla were exposed to different temperature regimes ranging from 25øC to 40øC and their effects were investigated on relative growth rate, pigments, total lipids, amount of total proteins and tissue phosphorus content. Relative growth rate of A. pinnata plants was more sensitive to higher temperature than that of A. micropltylla. Chlorophyll a and b content increased at - 35øC in A. p;nnata and at 40øC inA. m;crophylla. Amount of anthocyanins decreased in A. pinnata after 24 h exposure at all temperatures. Increase in total lipids was noticed in A. pinnata over a broader range of temperature from 30øC to 40øC, while it was more only at 40øC in A. m;crophylla. Temperature stress also caused an increase in amount of total proteins in A. pinnata at - 35øC. Invariably, higher level of tissue phosphorus was noted in both the species at elevated temperatures.
