[Economic assessment of Norway spruce plantations of various density]
2003
Kairiukstis, L. | Malinauskas, A. (Lithuanian Inst. of Forestey, Girionys (Lithuania))
The 39-year-old Norway spruce plantations of different initial density (820, 1970, 3010, 6500 and 12500 trees ha*[-1)) that were established in the Dubrava experimental-training forest enterprise were studied. It was found that the initial density of the plantations had influence on its productivity on extent of stem thinning towards the top, stem straightness, branch number in a whorl and in a stem distance from 1 to 2 metres of height as well as on branch thickness and, thus, on quality of the first log. The strongest influence of increase in initial density on quality of the brutt log was observed untill the initial density reached 3000 trees ha*[-1). If the interest rate reaches 0-3 and productivity of Norway spruce stands under Oxalidosa site conditions is average and higher, the optimum initial density of Norway spruce plantations varies from 2500 to 4000 trees ha*[-1).
