Influence of bulb rot on onion storage

The fungi colonizing onion bulbs under field conditions in Lithuania, which later caused storage decay, were investigated in 1999-2001. Fungi and bacteria had been isolated from bulbs 2 weeks before onion harvest and later in stored 2-4 deg C for 4 and 7 months. Among them Penicillium spp. and bacteria species were more prevailing. Air temperature influenced bulb maturity and storability as much as amount of precipitation throughout vegetation. Correlation dependence between the prevalence of microorganisms and values of precipitation was determined. Most frequent onion diseases during storage were neck rot, fusarium bulb rot, black mould rot and bacterial soft rots. Mixed rots of onion bulbs were predominant. Yield losses ranged from 3.98 to 13.15 in storage.
