The impact of underground pressure water on the productivity of bogged and drained forests in Latvia
2003
Zalitis, P. | Indriksons, A. (Latvian State Forestry Institute "Silava", Salaspils (Latvia))
The forest stand productivity in the bogged and drained forests with deep (0.3-4.5 m) peat layer does not depend on the thickness of peat layer, the nutrients necessary for forest growth are supplied by confined aquifer water discharge. The intensity of discharge and amount of nutrients inflowing depend mostly on the difference between piezometric surfaces of groundwater in the confined aquifer and in the unconfined aquifer. The supplementary inflow of biogenous elements by confined aquifer water reflects in drained forest productivity: the height increment of pine trees in area with increased pressure corresponds to site index I; in area with low pressure - to site index II.
