[Fire caused losses to the National economy of Latvia]

Nature, people and material values produced by them are important for the national economy and they have to be protected fires. Unfortunately, Latvia does not have many achievements in the field of fire prevention. One of the reasons is insufficient and inadequate state financing of the Fire and Rescue Service. According to the investment programme IA 11 "The purchase of the fire-fighting and rescue equipment" 1998-2003, at the end of the year 2002 less than 1 million lats was invested. It has caused the situation, where the equipment of the State Fire and Rescue Service of the State is desolate and is renewed only by 2% annually. As a result work of fire brigades does not improve, number of fire caused deaths is rising and considerable material values are lost every year.
