Disease incidence, mortality and reduction in farm income due to mortality in broilers in the arid zone [Pakistan]

A study was undertaken by collecting data from 83 broiler farms in district Chakwal, Punjab, Pakistan during the year 1998- 1999 to investigate disease incidence, mortality and reduction in farm income due to mortality. Relative distribution of various diseases in broilers in Chakwal revealed the highest incidence of yolk-sac infection (37.4%) and the lowest of hydro-pericardium syndrome (1.8%). Cases of unknown etiology were 17.1%. Incidence of coccidiosis and infectious coryza was more than 11% and infectious bursal disease more than 15%. Overall mortality in broilers (6.93 plus minus 0.28%) represented a little higher loss in earlier stages of broiler's life (day-1 to day-24) as compared to later stages (greater than 24-day). Hygienic status of the farm had a significant (P less than 0.01) while flock size, floor space utilization, vaccination schedule and duration between two batches had no effect on overall mortality in broilers. Mortality on the average resulted in a reduction of Rs. 9705.537 in net income per broiler flock/farm and Rs. 805559 in total for all the 83 broiler flocks under study. Preventing stress, especially during brooding stage, assuring proper hygiene and a regular check on disease incidence would help in reducing mortality several folds.
