Toxicological studies on Hemidesmus indicus var. indicus R. Br.

Roots of Hemidesmus indicus var. indicus are used traditionally in India for various ailments. The present study evaluated the toxicological profile of aqueous ethanolic extracts of the roots in animal models. In gross behavioural studies depressive effect was noted above 3000 mg/kg dose level. The LD50 was calculated as 915.21 mg/kg for vegetative period and 853.70 mg/ kg for flowering period by intra-peritoneal route. A significant increase in the total R.B.C. count in rats treated with plant materials collected during vegetative periods and a significant increase in the blood urea, ASAT, ALAT and serum creatinine levels. Histopathological studies revealed hepatomegaly, sclerosed glomeruli. No marked difference was noted in the seasonal samples.
