Indigenous knowledge of herbal medicine in Bangladesh: Treatment of Jaundice by the tribal communities of hill tracts districts

Indigenous knowledge of herbal medicine for the cure of jaundice existing among the tribal communities of Chittagong and Hill Tracts districts of Bangladesh has been documented during ethnobotanical survey by taking random interviews among Chakmas, Marmas, Thanchungas and Tripuras since 1995. The ethnobotanical document shows that the plant materials of 16 botanical species are used for the treatment of jaundice among these four tribes. The samples were collected, identified and preserved at the Herbarium of Chittagong University as voucher specimens. An enumeration of these plant materials is prepared with their botanical and vernacular names. Each plant is provided with its short botanical description and using practices. The status and occurrence of each species in the flora of Bangladesh are also stated for giving priorities for conservation and sustainable development.
