Accumulation of NPK in effluent irrigated soils of the Korangi industrial area, Karachi-Sindh [Pakistan]

To assess the NPK accumulation in effluent irrigated soil of the Korangi Industrial Area, Karachi (Sindh), this study was conducted during the years 2000 and 2001. The soil samples were collected from two depths 0-20 and 20-40 cm. A total of 88 soil samples were collected including 80 samples from soil irrigated with effluents (40 samples from each depth) and 8 with tubewell water (4 samples from each depth), considered as `background soil'. All the soil samples were analyzed for physico-chemical properties and soil major elements (NPK). The soil samples were found alkaline in reaction, non-saline, moderately to highly calcareous in nature and low to adequate in organic matter content. The average values of NPK were 79.12, 38.59 and 98.68 mg/kg-1 at surface 0-20 cm soil depth while 67.33, 29.50 and 81.37 mg/kg-1 at 20-40 cm soil depth, respectively. The background soil values for NPK were 22.09, 12.23 and 102.54 mg/kg-1 at 0-20 cm soil depth and 17.50, 10.10 and 96.35 mg/kg-1 at 20-40 cm soil depth, respectively. The concentrations of N and P in effluent irrigated soils were significantly (P less than 0.01) higher than those in tubewell irrigated soils and similarly NPK levels were significantly (P less than 0.01) higher in surface soils ;Is compared to subsurface soils.
