Effect of feeding whole crop maize versus mott grass silages on milk yield and its composition in Sahiwal cows

The present study was designed to determine the effects of feeding value of silages from whole crop maize (WCM) and mott grass (MG) on dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield and its composition in Sahiwal cows at late lactating stage. Eight cows nearly of the same age, weight and lactation stage were randomly divided into 2 groups. viz. A and B of 4 cows each. Two rations viz., I and II were randomly allotted to these groups. Both the rations were based on sixty percent test materials (WCM and MG silages) plus forty percent concentrates. Each ration was given act libitum twice daily. The experiment lasted for twenty days. The data were analyzed using Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Significantly (P less than 0.001) higher DMI was observed for cows fed MG silage as compared to WCM silage. Which in turn, significantly (P less than 0.05) increased the milk yield. However, the differences between the milk components were found to be non-significant. Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that the over all response of the experimental cows to the silage from MG was looking promising than silage from whole crop maize. Therefore, it was suggested that for an effective dairy farming in rural or urban area of Pakistan, cultivating mott grass and then converting its surplus quantity into silage should be encouraged, rather than making silage from whole crop cereals such as whole crop maize.
