Response of okra to water stress

This experiment was conducted at Central Cotton Research Institute, Multan during March, 1998 using triplicate split plot design by randomizing treatments in main plots and six okra (Abelmoschus Esculentus L. MOENCH) varieties (Chinese Red. Clemson Spineless, Dwarf Long Pod Green (DLPG), Parbhani Karanti, Green Velvet and No. 8) in sub-plots. litter-row and plant to plant distance was maintained at 75 cm and 20 cm, respectively. Four treatments, i.e., normal (weekly irrigation), and three stress treatments (water stress at penta-foliate and budding, flowering and podding, and seeding and maturity) were practiced. The data of fresh fruit yield per plant, number of seeds per plant, number of branches per plane; number of seeds per plant and seed yield per plant revealed tolerance to drought in varieties Green Velvet, Parbhani Karanti and DLPG. The maximum reduction in these treatments was observed when water stress (three consecutive irrigation withheld) was imposed at flowering and podding stage suggesting that this stage was the most sensitive stage to drought in okra plants.
