Farmers' adoption analysis of improved gram cultivation practices in tehsil Takht-e-Nasrati [Pakistan]

This study scrutinizes adoption of improved gram cultivation practices of the farmers. Data for the study was collected in fifteen randomly selected villages of Tehsil Tekht-e-Nasrati, with the help of a designed questionnaire. Secondary data was also used to investigate the germane facts. The total universe of this research work consisted on 150 randomly samples selected farmers. It was found that majority of the sample farmers (82%) have adopted the improved gram varieties. This attitude of the adopters could be attributed to the fact that modern varieties were considered blight resistant. The sampled farmers also reported weeds as a serious problem, and tackled with traditional labour methods. Interestingly gram blight was found to be the serious and common problem of the area by the sample farmers. The reasons pointed out were continuous rainfall and severe cold during the flowering stage of the crop. In order to get rid of this menace they adopted some improved practices including cultivation of resistant varieties, destruction of diseased plants, early sowing and crop rotation.
