Impact of education level on the adoption of improved gram cultivation practices in tehsil Takht-I-Nasrati, Karak, NWFP [Pakistan]

This study examines the impact of education on the adoption of improved gram cultivation practices among the farmers. Data for the study was collected in 15 randomly selected villages of Tehsil Takht-i-Nasrati, with the help of a designed questionnaire. The total universe consisted of 150 randomly selected farmers. It was found that majority of the sampled farmers (82%) who had adopted the improved gram varieties were educated. The sampled farmers reported weeds and gram blight both as serious and common problems of the area. The study also found remarkable differences in information seeking behaviour of the educated and uneducated farmers. Educated farmers quoted extension as their reliable source and mostly sought information from extension, whereas uneducated farmers seek information from other sources such as farmers. friends and relatives. The study recommends that the farmers must be educated about the improved technology to motivate them to adopt improved practices including cultivation of resistant varieties, destruction of diseased plants early sowing, application of fertilizer, plant protection measures and crop rotation etc.
