Performance of broilers fed various levels of cooked hatchery waste meal

Raw hatchery waste was cooked with water under pressure, dried and chemically analyzed. 120 broiler chicks were fed diets containing 0, 2, 4 and 6% cooked hatchery waste meal (HWM), ad libitum to determine its effectiveness and acceptability as a nutrient source from hatch to 6 wk of age. Diets were formulated to be isocaloric and equivalent in as many nutrients as possible. The addition of cooked HWM at 4% level had no effect on body weight compared with control diet. Feed intake was found to be similar at all levels of HWM but it was found to be significantly less in control diet in starter phase. Contrasting results were obtained with feed efficiency with control birds being most efficient in starter phase but generally similar to birds fed 2% and 4% cooked HWM. Processed HWM was acceptable and highly utilizable as a protein source and nutrient substitute in the diets of the commercial broiler.
