Drought response of spring wheat genotypes grown under field stress condition

The study were conducted on twenty four wheat genotypes (Triticum aestivum L.) in the greenhouse and research area 2000-2001, using CRD and RCBD designs respectively. The correlation coefficient indicated that survival rates of treat I, treat II, treat III, treat IV, root/shoot ratio, root density, number of veins, number of tillers per plant and 1000- grain weight had positive significant genotypic as well as positive and highly significant phenotypic; correlation with grain yield. Whereas plant height had positive and significant association with yield at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Leaf area had positive but significant association at genotypic level but positive arid highly significant association at phenotypic level with yield. Stomata size and epidermal cell size had positive but non- significant correlation with yield at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Stomatal frequency and hydrophilic colloids had negative but non- significant correlation with yield at genotypic as well as phenotypic level. Path-coefficient analysis which is the estimate of contribution of each character to yield revealed that 1000-grain weight had exerted maximum direct positive effect followed by stomatal frequency, root density, plant height, survival rate treat III, treat II, treat I and number of tillers per plant, whereas leaf area, root/shoot ratio, survival rate treat IV, epidermal cell size, number of veins, stomatal size, hydrophilic colloids had negative direct effects on grain yield.
