Effect of planting patterns on the growth, yield and quality of two maize hybrids

Effect of different planting patterns viz. 60-cm spaced single rows (111111 plants ha-1), 70-cm spaces single rows (95238 plants ha-1), double rows (95238 plants ha-1) on growth, yield and quality of two maize hybrids (Monsanto-919 and Monsanto-717) were determined. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement and three replications. Net plot size was 7.5 m x 3.6 m for 60-cm spaced single and 30190 cm spaced double rows and 7.5 m x 4.2 m for 70-cm spaced single and 35/105-cm spaced double rows. Significantly higher grain yield of 8.94 t ha-1 was recorded from Monsanto-919. Monsanto-717 planted at 70-cm spaced single rows exhibited maximum leaf area of 5957.03 cm-2. On the other hand minimum leaf area of 5123.09 cm-2 was recorded from Monsanto-717 planted at 60-cm spaced single rows. Significantly maximum 1000-grain weight of 435.44 g was recorded from Monsanto-919 as against Monsanto-717. Significantly maximum average crop growth rate (37.73 gm-2 d-1) was observed when Monsanto-919 was planted at 30/90 spaced double rows. While same hybrid exhibited minimum average crop growth rate (23.47 gm-2 d-1) planted at 35/105 cm spar double rows. Significantly maximum net assimilation rate (16.24 gm-2 d-1) was recorded at planting pattern of 30/90 cm apart double rows against significantly minimum net assimilation rate (13.94 gm-2 d-1) at pattern of 35/105 cm spaced double rows. Monsanto-919 planted at 35/105 cm apart double rows exhibited significantly highest harvest index of 39.04 percent. While Monsanto-717 planted at 60-cm apart single rows gave the lowest harvest index of 33.09 percent. Hybrids, planting patterns and their interactions did not significantly affect the days taken to 50 percent tussling, days taken to 50 percent silking, number of cobs per plant, number of grains per cob, grain oil and crude protein content.
